"Wushu" is the Chinese term for "martial arts" ( 武 "Wu" = combat or martial, 術 "Shu" = art). Wushu was developed as a sport in an effort to standardized the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. Derived from “Kung Fu”, Wushu emphasizes more on performance and aesthetics geared towards competition.
Wushu is divided mainly on two disciplines: First is “Wushu Taolu”, a choreographed form consisting of hand forms or a variety of weapons displaying ones athletic and acrobatic skills showing martial arts application and spirit. Second is “Wushu Sanda”, a hand to hand combat that includes striking similar to kickboxing, and includes wrestling and take downs.
Governed by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Wushu has become an international sport holding various local, national, continental and world championships, working towards being included as an official olympic sport.
